Artist statement:
The project title is ‘Black & White’ reason being that it's a play on word with when we describe something that is so obvious when it sometimes may not be, this work is meant to taunt the viewer to look and requisition the work the title and the surroundings of the image to get to what is the final destination of the image then think and ponder also why I decided to question that media statement or news and for what reasons, creating the whole perspective of conversion about my work rather than leaving people in confusion. Each image within the project of ‘Black and White’ has its own subtitle to help narrow down the year and possible month I am alluding to of the situation of falsified media coverage or mistaken coverage that determined the world's fate of people's actions after. Each image taken and created have been designed and made using resin-coated paper on a 10x8 Toyo and a phase one camera, the physical process of getting the images to come out like this as negatives is remaining a mystery as this creates more of the conversion of why this work is so mysteries and there is no connection to people, to processing or the understanding how it works, which then forces you as a viewer to ponder and think about how its made but then answer the main question why is it made and what is its message trying to say.
The theory and work that I have created is heavily supported by the Athenian philosopher named Plato which wrote about ‘Allegory of the Cave’ which is about a man going outside of the cave seeing the world in colour and understanding to then be killed for telling the truth and rather than getting people to understand slowly tried to bombard them with this news to overwhelm and scare this crowd of people within the cave. The reason this interruption that I use and think about that I have on the allegory of the cave is that I don’t want to overwhelm the viewer of my work to the point where it creates mass disrespect to people or creates controversy as its a one-sided message within the image, my work is created based on factual media released news and then made to be neutral where then it is left for the person viewing to think and decided the real outcome or meaning that is the truth to figure out for themselves rather than stoning the man that believes he is right. Which in turn for my work being left open for opinions and thoughts brings and puts people's ideas and thinking to different perspectives creating a conversation to understanding without ever forcing them to believe that they are wrong within the 1st place.
The main question for this thought will this project ever end, Will the opinions of peoples ideas what is wrong and right be the same?
Work Statement:
The term rumour cascade refers to the successful dissemination of misleading information. ‘APRIL 2020’ examines the propagation of fake news – an activity that not only damages trust but can destroy lives. It seeks to question and challenge this purported knowledge and raise concerns of the scale of this damaging practice. The presentation of x-ray-like photographs offer the chance to decode, re-question and re-evaluate them.
